Five Tips To Help Save On Cooling Costs

Blog

As a homeowner, having air conditioning is a great privilege. However, you may not think so once you see the energy bills come in each month, especially during the hotter seasons of the year. Here are five tips that can help you save on these cooling costs while still being able to keep your home as cool and comfortable as possible:

  1. Run the Ceiling Fan: Running the ceiling fan at the same time that you are running the AC is a great idea because it continues air flow and creates a nice, cool breeze. This allows you to set the thermostat to a higher temperature since the ceiling fan will help to keep you cooler. Just be sure that you turn the ceiling fan off whenever you leave a room because it won't keep the room any cooler and will just waste energy. Ceiling fans are only meant to help keep you cooler -- not an empty room.
  2. Put the Blinds Down: Whenever you leave the house, always be sure that all the blinds and drapes are drawn shut. This is going to trap in the cool air and prevent the sun's rays from being able to easily warm up your house.
  3. Get the AC Serviced Once a Year: Once a year, you should get your air conditioner serviced by a company like Dodds Heating & Cooling. The best time to do this is right before the summer time to be sure that your air conditioner is going to be working at its best possible efficiency when you need it most. Air conditioning service contractors will check to be sure that your air filter is clean, as well as the other fans and hoses in the system. They will also be sure that it doesn't need any repairs, and if repairs are needed, they will make them.
  4. Check the Connections of the Vents: Every once in a while, you should check the connection of the vents to be sure that they are sealed properly. A vent that is not sealed properly will end up having air leaks that can prevent your air conditioning from being able to keep the home as cool as it should. If you notice any issues, tighten the vents or use sealant to place around them.
  5. Replace Your AC if it Is More Than 12 Years Old: An air conditioning system that is more than 12 years old is likely not a system that comes with top energy-efficiency performance. New air conditioners are made to have the highest possible energy efficiency, meaning that you will have much more energy savings if you replace your old one with a newer model.

By following these tips to help save on cooling costs every year, you can be sure that you are able to continue living in a cool and comfortable house without the stress of worrying how much it will cost you in the end.
