4 Sounds Your Air Conditioning Shouldn't Be Making

Blog

When you have an air conditioner, you need to be aware of normal operating sounds and abnormal operating sounds. It is important to be aware of what it means when you hear an irregular noise coming from your unit and what you should do about it.

Sound #1: Humming

If your unit starts to make a loud humming sound, pay attention to that sound. A humming sound is not something you want to hear coming out of your unit. Generally, that type of sound is generated from either the motor that runs your AC unit or from the capacitator. Those are essential parts that drive your system, so you don't want to ignore them if they are making a strange noise.

Sound #2: Clicking

Second, generally, a clicking sound is a troubling sound coming from your air conditioning unit. An electrical issue usually causes a clicking sound. As electricity powers your air conditioning unit, when you suspect an electrical problem, you will want to get that addressed right away. This is a sound you are going to want to address.

Sound #3: Banging

Third, a banging sound is generally created by the external component of your air conditioning system. A loose part within your unit usually makes a banging sound, as that part is hitting things that it shouldn't. You are going to want to address any banging issues right away, as the longer the item bangs around, the more that item will get damaged. It can damage other components inside the system as well. The more things bang around, the more damage it can cause.

Sound #4: Squealing

Fourth, you should be wary of any squealing sounds as well. An issue generally creates a squealing sound with the fan belt. A loose, damaged, or otherwise compromised fan belt is going to make a loud squealing sound that you are not going to be able to ignore. A fan belt can be quickly fixed and should be addressed immediately.

You should become familiar with the standard operating sounds that your air conditioner makes so that you are aware when your air conditioner is making sounds that mean it is in distress and is in need of repairs from a professional technician. If your system is humming, clicking, banging, or squealing, call in a professional to fix whatever is causing the issue in order to prevent further and more serious damage to your system.
